East Tennessee State University softball swept its way to two Sunday afternoon wins over St. Bonaventure, 3-1, and Mercyhurst, 7-3, at Betty Basler Field.
Sophomore infielder Tiare Rieger played hero in the opener, sending a three-run homer out over the right center field fence in the top of the fourth inning, just missing the scoreboard. The long ball, which scored junior catcher Leinani Lutu and sophomore outfielder Leilani Coleman, provided ETSU's only scoring in the first half of the doubleheader.
North Alabama 5, Samford 2
The Samford softball team finished play at the North Alabama Tournament today by facing the hosts for the second time in as many days. After defeating the Lions yesterday, the Bulldogs struggled to get much going offensively as they fell 5-2 to finish off a 3-2 weekend overall. Samford falls to 16-9 on the season after the defeat today.
Chattanooga 8, LIU 7 Presley Williamson belted her fourth home run of the weekend, this time a grand slam, to lead Chattanooga softball to an 8-7, extra inning win over LIU in the final game of the Make it Happen Games in Madeira Beach, Fla., Sunday morning.
Winthrop 4, Western Carolina 2Western Carolina softball went toe-to-toe with host Winthrop throughout Sunday afternoon's tournament finale before the Eagles used a four-run seventh inning to stun the Catamounts 4-2 from the on-campus Terry Field in Rock Hill.
