Sophomore Sydney Dirks capped a perfect birthday on Wednesday afternoon with a two-run walk-off home run to lead Western Carolina past Queens University of Charlotte 3-1 in a gritty performance at the Catamount Softball Complex.
The walk-off is the second for WCU (18-15) in its 13-game homestand, as Mattie Mentel drew a bases-loaded walk last Tuesday to defeat Gardner-Webb in mid-week action.
Wofford softball (19-11, 2-1) defeated cross-town rival USC Upstate (26-7, 1-2) 4-2 in a midweek matchup on Wednesday, March 26, at USC Upstate. Starting pitcher Natalya Salo delivered a gem and a Hope Ingle two-run home run late in the game secured Wofford the victory. The Samford softball team remained at home after a series win over Mercer for a midweek matchup against Jacksonville State. The two sides met for the second time this season, with both results going the Gamecocks as the Bulldogs fell 9-0 tonight. Samford's record falls to 20-14 after the defeat and they remain at 2-1 in Southern Conference play.
