Saturday's softball roundup

Samford 16, Western Carolina 2

SAM - The Samford softball team finished off a three-game Southern Conference series with Western Carolina this afternoon. The Bulldogs dominated all three games of the set, capping it off with a 16-2 win today that captured the series sweep. Samford outscored the Catamounts 44-6 on the weekend and move their record to 23-14 overall and 5-1 in SoCon play.

WCU - Samford continued its power surge from Friday's doubleheader sweep with five more home runs as part of a 16-2 run-rule victory on Saturday afternoon in Southern Conference action at the Catamount Softball Complex.
Sophomore Sydney Dirks led the Catamounts with a pair of hits, while classmate Maya McPherson added a base knock in the defeat. Sophomore Becka Wonsick and senior Tessa Juett both had an RBI in the contest.

UNCG 6, Wofford 1

UNCG 9, Wofford 8 (11 innings)

UNCG - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team claimed the series sweep over the Wofford Terriers on Saturday after securing game two, 6-1, and walking-off game three, 9-8, in eleven innings in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action at UNCG Softball Stadium.
 
After going 2-0 on Saturday, the Spartans now stand 26-10 overall and 4-2 in conference.

WOF - The Wofford softball team (19-14, 2-4) was swept in both games of a doubleheader against UNCG (26-10, 3-2) on Saturday, March 29, in Greensboro. In game one, the Terriers were closed out in a late game offensive push by the Spartans in a 6-1 loss. In game two, the Terriers scored eight runs but were defeated in eleven innings by UNCG 9-8 on a walk off home run. The Wofford offense left 15 runners on base in the combined two games, unable to score on opportunities when presented to them.  

ETSU 1, Furman 0

Furman 7, ETSU 1

ETSU - East Tennessee State University softball fell in its second conference series to Furman on Saturday. 
Despite winning the second game 1-0 behind a masterful performance in the circle from junior Marissa Barnes, the Bucs' offense faltered in a 7-1 loss that moved ETSU to 2-4 in conference play.

FUR - Freshman Lily O'Bryan earned her first career win in the circle as Furman captured the rubber game of its best-of-three series at ETSU, 7-1, on Saturday afternoon at Bett Basler Field. After Furman claimed a 6-4 victory on Friday night, the Bucs had evened the series with a 1-0 decision in the opening game of Saturday's twinbill.

Chattanooga 2, Mercer 1

Chattanooga 6, Mercer 0

UTC - The Chattanooga Mocs softball team swept Mercer 2-1 and 6-0 on Saturday at Sikes Field in Macon in Southern Conference action.
 
Chattanooga improved to 24-9 overall and 4-1 in league play while the Bears' record evens out at 18-18 and fall to 1-4 in conference action.

MER - Visiting Chattanooga rode the shoulders of a 2-hit performance from Southern Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year Peja Goold to a 2-1 win in the opener, and then used a pair of multi-run frames to register a 6-0 win in the nightcap and finish off a series-opening doubleheader sweep of Mercer on Saturday at Sikes Field.
