SoCon Softball Player, Pitcher of the Week announced

Mercer’s Langford, Western Carolina’s Juett honored

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer outfielder Hallie Langford and Western Carolina left-hander Tessa Juett have been named the Southern Conference softball player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for their efforts from March 17-23. The awards are selected by the league office.

Mercer’s Langford, who also won the honor on Feb. 24, hit .538 over four games last week for the Bears. On March 19, the junior went 3-for-4 with a walk, two RBIs, two stolen bases and three runs scored in a 11-4 win at West Georgia. In a doubleheader with Samford on March 22, Langford had three hits, two stolen bases, two walks and two runs scored. The next day, the native of Trenton, Florida, hit a two-run homer, stole one base and scored three runs in a 12-5 series finale win at Samford. Langford is currently the SoCon leader in runs scored with 37.

Western Carolina’s Juett went 2-0 last week, including a shutout, for the Catamounts. The senior’s first win of the week came against Gardner-Webb on March 18, striking out four batters in 5.1 innings of work. Juett threw a complete-game shutout in an 11-0 win over ETSU on March 22, finishing with eight strikeouts and zero walks in the league’s only shutout over the weekend. The Berea, Kentucky, product concluded her weekend with six strikeouts over four innings of relief work, giving up just one hit in a 5-2 setback against ETSU on March 23. Juett is currently third in the SoCon in strikeouts this season with 71.

Mercer (17-16, 1-2 SoCon) travels to Georgia Tech on March 25, before hosting Chattanooga (21-9, 2-1) for a weekend series on March 29-30. Western Carolina (17-15, 2-1) welcomes Queens on March 26, and Samford (20-13, 2-1) on March 29-30.
