Spartanburg, S.C.&nbsp;– The Wofford Terriers were tabbed as the preseason favorites to win the Southern Conference women’s basketball title for the 2024-25 season, according to a vote by the league’s head coaches. Wofford senior guard Rachael Rose was named the SoCon Preseason Player of the Year. &nbsp; Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams or student-athletes as part of the balloting. Due to a tie in voting, the preseason all-conference team was extended to 11 members.Six of the eight teams were represented on the 11-member SoCon preseason all-conference team, with Furman being the only team to place three players on the team. UNCG, Chattanooga, and Wofford each placed two on the team, while ETSU and Samford had one selection each. &nbsp; Wofford picked up seven of the eight possible first-place votes in the coaches’ poll, earning 49 points in the poll overall. The Terriers finished 17-13 overall and 8-6 in SoCon play last season. Head coach Jimmy Garrity’s team returns three starters including Rose, the 2023-24 SoCon Player of the Year, and Helen Matthews, a fifth-year guard who made the preseason all-conference team despite missing last season. &nbsp; UNCG finished the 2023-24 campaign 21-12 overall and 8-6 in SoCon play, finishing runner-up at the Ingles SoCon Women’s Basketball Championship. The Spartans were selected second by the coaches with the remaining first-place vote and 42 points. Trina Patterson’s team returns preseason all conference players Jayde Gamble, a senior guard, as well as graduate forward, Khalis Cain. &nbsp; Samford and Furman picked up 31 points to finish tied for third in the poll. Samford who finished last season 14-16, 6-8 in the conference, is represented on the preseason all-conference team by sophomore guard Kennedy Langham. Furman, who finished 15-16 overall and 5-9 in the SoCon, placed a league leading three players on the preseason all-conference team, including senior forward Kate Johnson, senior forward Jada Session, and graduate guard Tate Walters. &nbsp; ETSU took fifth in the coaches’ poll with 25 points. Senior guard Kendall Folley earned a spot on the preseason all-conference team. &nbsp; Chattanooga, the 2023-24 Regular Season and Tournament Champion, was picked sixth in the coaches’ poll with 23 points. Senior guard Sigrun Olafsdottir and graduate guard/forward Kalifa Ford were named to the preseason all-conference team for the Mocs. Mercer finished seventh in the poll with 13 points, while Western Carolina rounded out the polls with 10 points. The 2024-25 season gets under way on Monday, Nov. 4, with six teams in action. Samford and ETSU kick off their seasons a day later. 2025 Ingles Basketball Championship

SPARTANBURG, S.C.– The Southern Conference announced its 2024-25 women’s basketball league schedule Wednesday afternoon. The SoCon’s eight women’s basketball teams will all play double-round-robin, 14-game intraleague schedules, totaling 56 league contests. Conference play begins on Thursday, Jan. 9, with all ETSU, UNCG, Chattanooga, and Western Carolina in action.&nbsp;The other four teams will begin conference play on Saturday, Jan. 11.In total, 24 conference games take place in January and 28 contests in February. All conference matchups are set for Thursday and Saturday. The regular season concludes with four conference showdowns on Saturday, March 1.&nbsp;Three teams welcome new coaches this season, which are Mercer, Chattanooga, and Western Carolina.Mercer’s Michelle Clark-Hear will begin her first season as head coach for the Bears. She served in a hybrid role of both Assistant Coach and Assistant Athletic Director for Women’s Basketball at Mississippi State last season. Prior to that she was the head coach at Cincinnati from 2018-23, amassing 74 wins.Deandra Schirmer takes the helm at Chattanooga after spending the 2019-2024 at Valdosta State as the head coach. While at Valdosta State, Shirmer produced an 86-19 record in the Gulf South Conference and a 114-31 overall record. Under her leadership, the team made four consecutive NCAA appearances, advancing to the Elite Eight in 2022.Western Carolina’s Jonathan Tsipis takes over the program after spending the last two seasons as an Advisor for Scouting and Analytics at Marquette. Previously, Tsipis spent five seasons as head coach at Wisconsin (2016-21) after a run at George Washington that included two NCAA appearances and a 92-38 record (2012-16).The Ingles Southern Conference Basketball Championship will be held March 6-9 at Harrah’s Cherokee Center – Asheville in Asheville, North Carolina.&nbsp;Chattanooga won the regular-season title in 2023-24, the 23rd in school history, then won the SoCon Tournament crown with a 69-60 win over the Spartans.&nbsp;Full broadcast schedules will be announced later, but all eight schools’ home games will air on ESPN+ if not selected for national or regional broadcast.&nbsp;The 42nd season of Southern Conference women’s basketball opens Monday, Nov.4.&nbsp;&nbsp;For the composite league schedule, visit <a href="https://soconsports.com/wbb/schedule/" target="_self">SoConSports.com</a>. Rachael Rose named CSC Academic All-America

Wofford guard made third team after averaging 22 points and sporting a 3.86 GPA

 
Austin, Texas – The College Sports Communicators announced their Academic All-American teams, which honors outstanding academic and athletic achievement by student-athletes throughout the landscape of college sports, on Wednesday with Wofford’s Rachael Rose as a third team selection. 



Rose, the SoCon women’s basketball Player of the Year and Becky Hammon Award finalist, averaged 22 points per game and 8.3 rebounds per game this season. The Scranton, Pennsylvania, product lead the league in scoring, free throw percentage (.870), assists per game (5.4), assist to turnover ratio (2.3), and steals per game (2.1). 



During the season Rose reached multiple career milestones, including 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. She is the 19th Terrier all-time to reach 1,000 points. She now holds Wofford’s single season record for scoring after pouring in 670 total points this season. She also holds a new single season assists record with 163.



Nationally, Rose finished the season ranked seventh in points per game, 25th in free throw percentage, and 27th in assists per game after leading the Terriers to a 17-13 record and semifinal appearance in the SoCon Tournament.



She recorded the program's first triple-double against Furman on January 20, the first in the league since 2014. Rose posted 23 games with at least 20 points, including three with 30-plus and eight double-doubles. She scored a new career high of 38, the third most in program history, in the SoCon semifinals against UNCG.



Rose amassed many honors during the campaign, which was capped with her repeating as SoCon Player of the Year whilst also earning First-Team All-SoCon recognition. She was named SoCon Player of the Week a record seven times this season and earned the player of the month award for three of the four months it was issued. She also was named SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week three times. 



A junior, Rose was selected for the CSC Academic All-District team on March 26. She is majoring in Psychology and holds a 3.86 GPA.

Cullowhee, N.C. – Former head coach at both George Washington University and the University of Wisconsin, Jonathan Tsipis has been named the next head women's basketball head coach at Western Carolina University, Director of Athletics Alex Gary announced today. Tsipis (pronounced SIP-iss) comes to Cullowhee having most recently served on the staff at Marquette University. 
  
Tsipis, whose contract was approved by the WCU Board of Trustees on Friday morning, becomes the 14th different head women's basketball coach in Western Carolina history dating back to 1965. He is a veteran coach with 27 years of experience, including nearly a decade as a NCAA Division I women's basketball head coach. 
  
Tsipis will be formally introduced to the Catamount Nation at a special on-campus press conference next Wednesday, April 10, at Noon in the Ramsey Center Hospitality Room. Tsipis spent the past two seasons as the Advisor for Scouting and Analytics at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis., alongside Megan Duffy, who played for him while an assistant at Notre Dame and coached under him at George Washington. Duffy recently accepted the head coaching job at Virginia Tech in the ACC. The Golden Eagles women's basketball team went 44-20 over the past two years with consecutive 20-win seasons with Tsipis on the bench. Last season, Marquette posted the best seasonal start in program history. The Golden Eagles were one of just three non-Power 5 programs in the country to receive at-large bids to each of the last two NCAA Tournaments. 
  
Before starting on staff in the "Original Brew City" in September 2022, Tsipis spent five seasons on the sidelines an hour to the west at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. With the Badgers, Tsipis coached players to eight All-Big Ten honors including a pair of 1,000-point scorers Marsha Howard and Cayla McMorris. His 2018-19 season recruiting class featured three Top 100 players marking one of the highest-ranked classes in program history. 
  
Tsipis coached the Badgers to their best finish in nearly a decade in 2018-19 with a 15-win season and helped the team advance to the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals for the first time since 2013. 
 
Prior to his time at Wisconsin (2016-21), Tsipis served as the head coach at George Washington from 2012-16 where he helped turn the Colonials into a national power. 
  
Taking over a program that went 11-18 the year prior to his arrival, GW posted a record of 92-38 through four seasons with Tsipis at the helm. In his final two seasons in the nation's capital, the team had a 55-11 record with Atlantic-10 titles and NCAA Tournament appearances in both years. In 2014-15, Tsipis was named the A-10 Coach of the Year after seeing the Colonials peak as high as 19th in the national polls. He also coached and helped develop two-time honorable mention All-American and 2016 WNBA first-round draft pick Jonquel Jones, who was inducted into the GW Athletics Hall of Fame in February 2024. 
  
In four seasons at George Washington, Tsipis led the Colonials to three postseason appearances including the WNIT third round in 2013-14 and consecutive NCAA tournament berths in 2014-15 and 2015-16. 
  
"I am thrilled for the opportunity to lead the Western Carolina University women's basketball program," said Tsipis. "The vision that Athletics Director Alex Gary has for the athletics department as a whole and specifically for women's basketball is inspiring. The WCU campus and surrounding communities have long supported Catamount basketball. We will work tirelessly to recruit and develop student-athletes that take pride in wearing a Western Carolina jersey and compete for championships in the Southern Conference." 
 
Working under Women's Basketball Hall of Fame head coach Muffett McGraw at Notre Dame from 2003-12, Tsipis made a name for himself as one of the top assistant coaches in the country with a strong track record of player development. In 2008 he was promoted to associate head coach and recruiting coordinator, and that same year was named the BasketballScoop.com National Assistant Coach of the Year. 
  
In his nine seasons with the Fighting Irish, the team compiled a 228-77 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament every year including five Sweet 16 appearances and national runner-up finishes during his final two seasons.  
 
Tsipis earned his start in the coaching world with several positions in men's basketball, three in the state of North Carolina. Before his time at Notre Dame, he worked as the director of men's basketball operations at UNC Greensboro (2002-03) under Fran McCaffery, assistant men's basketball coach at Elon (2000-02), Le Moyne College (1999-2000) in Syracuse, N.Y., and Cornell (1996-99) and was an undergraduate men's basketball staff assistant at Duke (1995-96) under another Hall of Fame head coach Mike Krzyzewski. 
 
A native of Hinckley, Ohio, before moving to Durham, N.C., as a junior in high school, Tsipis graduated from North Carolina in 1996 with a bachelor's degree in pharmacy. He and his wife Leigh are parents to two children, a daughter Emily, and a son Joshua.

CHATTANOOGA---The Deandra Schirmer Era of Chattanooga women's basketball begins now. 
  
Schirmer becomes the eighth head coach of the Mocs, Vice Chancellor for Athletics Mark Wharton announced Thursday morning. 
  
"We're very happy to welcome Deandra to Chattanooga," he shared. "It was a quick yet thorough process. I was once again humbled and thrilled that such a high level of applicants were interested in leading one of our programs. Once we got through the zoom sessions and face-to-face interviews, it was apparent to our team that Deandra is the right person to lead us forward among an incredibly competitive and gifted field. 
  
"Deandra fits the values of who we are as a department and University. We're excited to announce she is a part of the Mocs family." 
  
She comes to Chattanooga from Valdosta State University where she was head coach for five seasons. Schirmer amassed an impressive 114-31 record (.786) and 86-19 mark (.819) in the Gulf South Conference. She built a DII juggernaut going 78-16 (.830) overall, 60-7 (.896) in league play, over the last three years. 
  
Her Lady Blazers earned NCAA Tournament berths the last four campaigns with a trip to the Elite Eight in 2022. They won the GSC in 2021 and 2024 and boasted three DII All-America selections in a record run. 
  
The 2023-24 season was one for the record books with a 30-3 overall mark and 23-1 in GSC play. The Lady Blazers reeled off a school record 27-game win streak which earned league Coach of the Year honors to go with the Atlanta Tipoff Club's <a href="https://vstateblazers.com/news/2024/4/3/womens-basketball-schirmer-named-whack-hyder-georgia-womens-college-coach-of-the-year.aspx">Wednesday release</a> of Schirmer being the 2024 Whack Hyder Georgia Women's Coach of the Year. Her squad ranked as high as second and finished 11th in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Poll. 
  
Her initial Lady Blazers squad lost 10 games in GSC play going 10-10 in 2019-20. They lost just nine in the next four years combined. 
  
"I am humbled and honored to be the head women's basketball coach at UTC," Schirmer said. "There is a tremendous tradition of success along with a fan base that is supportive of its women's basketball program. 
  
"I'm grateful to Dr. (Steven) Angle, Mark Wharton and his staff for providing me this opportunity to not only be a part of that tradition, but to take it to new heights. I'm excited to get to Chattanooga and get to work!" 
  
Schirmer has certainly worked hard to earn this opportunity. She was an all-conference and all-region performer at Cloud County (Kan.) Community College before finishing her playing career at USC-Aiken. She helped lead her squad to an eighth-place finish nationally as a senior earning CSC (former CoSIDA) Academic All-District first team honors. 
  
A year as a graduate assistant in marketing and promotions at Georgia State led Schirmer back to the court. She completed her GA assignment on the Panthers bench in 2013-14 before her first full-time opportunity opened in St. Pete, Fla. 
  
Schirmer completed five seasons as an assistant coach at Eckerd College. She helped lead the Tritons to 20-win ledgers every year as Paul Honsinger's ladies went 106-45 over that span. They went to the NCAA Tournament in four of those five seasons and were the No. 1 seed in the South Region in 2017 earning the program's first postseason victory. 
  
Originally from Holton, Kan., Schirmer was an all-state star in basketball and volleyball during her prep career at Holton High School. She captained both sports while also lettering in cross country and softball. Her efforts earned the coveted Naismith Award. She's a 2012 Business Marketing graduate of USCA and got her Master's in Sports Administration from GSU in 2014. 
  
"It is very evident that the supportive administration and community have been instrumental in developing the tradition of success here at UTC," Schirmer added. "I am eager to get started and to meet all the fans and alumni that make this place so special.

Raleigh, N.C. – The No. 14-seeded Chattanooga Mocs women's basketball team saw its championship season end with a 64-45 defeat to No. 3 N.C. State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon inside Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C. 
  
Chattanooga concludes the season at 28-4 overall behind its 17th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance. The 20-plus win season marked the second consecutive for the program and the 22nd in program history. 
  
The Mocs took the lead early in the game with Karsen Murphy scoring a three-pointer on the Mocs’ first possession. Chattanooga and N.C. State played back and forth for more than two minutes before the Wolfpack answered with a three at the 7:10 mark. The score was tied at five going into the first media timeout of the game. 
  
N.C. State then went on a seven-point run to take the lead and finished the first quarter with a 13-9 advantage. 
  
Caia Elisaldez scored her first points of the game to start the second quarter, pulling Chattanooga within two points of the Wolfpack. After a 7-2 point run by N.C. State, the Mocs trailed by seven at the second quarter media timeout. 
  
SoCon tournament MOP and First Team selection Jada Guinn scored four more points to send the Mocs into halftime down by a score of 26-17. Chattanooga shot 23 percent from the field during the first half with Jada Guinn leading the Mocs offensively with six points, going two-for-six from the field and making both of her free throw attempts. 
  
N.C. State came out of halftime strong, knocking down a three-pointer on its first possession of the half,  but Chattanooga responded as Raven Thompson converted a fouled layup to a three-point possession. The Wolfpack then went on a 12-point run followed by a made jump shot from Hannah Kohn and a layup from Takia Davis. Chattanooga scored nine points to N.C. State’s 19 in the third quarter. 
  
Chattanooga was lead in the fourth quarter by Jada Guinn and Raven Thompson who scored 13 and 11 points, respectively. A 9-0 run in the final 2:40 of the game came up short for the Mocs as the Wolfpack won, 64-45. The Mocs shot 33.3 percent from the field and 20 percent from behind the arc in the second half of play. 
  
Jada Guinn finished with 13 points and seven rebounds for the Mocs. The graduate guard scored double digits in 32 of the 33 games this season, 11 of which were 20-point performances, and included five double-double performances. The four-time SoCon Player of the Week lead Chattanooga in scoring all-season, averaging 16 points per game. 
 
Chattanooga’s 28 wins this season is the most since the 2014-15 season. The Mocs got the automatic bid after winning their 20th SoCon tournament title and 23rd regular season title. They joined South Carolina as the only two teams to go undefeated in true road games this season.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team dropped its contest at North Carolina A&T, 56-51 on Friday night in the first round of the 2024 Postseason WNIT at the Corbett Sports Center to complete the 2023-24 season. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
NC A&T got on the board first in the contest with a layup from Chaniya Clark, but that was the only lead the Aggies would hold in the first half. <dfn>Ayanna Khalfani</dfn> responded with a layup on the other end to begin a 10-3 run for the Spartans (12-5). The Aggies chipped in four unanswered points to close out the first quarter, but UNCG remained on top heading to the break, 12-9. 
  
The Aggies started off the second frame with two more points, but the Spartans tallied a 14-2 run to take the 26-13 lead with 2:19 remaining in the first half. NC A&T was able to end the second quarter with four consecutive free throws, but UNCG remained on top, 28-19 going to the locker room. 
  
NC A&T found its stride in the third quarter by outscoring the Spartans 21-12. The Aggies took the first lead of the game since the start of the contest with Paris Locke scoring two free throws (40-38). <dfn>Makiah Asidanya</dfn> chipped in for two free throws of her own to close out the third frame with a tied 40-point ball game. 
  
The final quarter was an all-out battle between the Aggies and Spartans, coming down to the wire. The Aggies outlasted the Spartans 16-11 in the final frame. With 1:16 remaining in the game, <dfn>Khalis Cain</dfn> recorded a second chance layup to cut the deficit to one (52-51). NC A&T was able to close out the game with a 4-0 run to secure the 56-51 win.
