Sunday's Women's Basketball Roundup

Samford 112, Fisk 61

The Samford women's basketball team cruised to a convincing 112-61 win over Fisk Sunday evening in the Pete Hanna Center. The game was the first home game of the season for Samford. The Bulldogs are now 1-4 after opening the season with road games at Tennessee, Central Arkansas, Memphis and Florida State. Fisk fell to 1-4 with the loss. Samford was led in the win by freshman Claire Johnson with a career-high 18 points. Kylee Lewandowski also had a career high with 17 points. Kennedy Langham had 14 points, Emily Bowman had 13 points and Sadie Stetson added 10 points. Sierra Godbolt dished out a team-high eight assists.

Mercer 46, North Carolina A&T 38

Home-standing Mercer used 60 percent field goal shooting, as well as a 10-for-11 clip from the free throw line, to fuel a 13-point disparity in the final quarter that rallied the Bears past North Carolina A&T, 46-38, on Sunday afternoon in Hawkins Arena. The triumph snapped a two-game skid for the Bears (2-2) who scored 20 points off of turnovers, while also registering a 16-for-20 clip from the free throw line. The setback extended a season-opening four-game losing streak for the Aggies who returned all five starters off of last season's 22-win club that captured a pair of games in the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT).

Mississippi State 69, Chattanooga 44

Chattanooga women's basketball gave its best shot to the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon in Starkville, but it just wasn't enough as the Mocs ended up falling in the contest 69-44. The Mocs (2-3) kept it tight with the Bulldogs (4-0) over the opening 20 minutes of action, as UTC trailed by only five points at the halftime break. However, a strong third quarter from MSU proved too much to overcome as Mississippi State would build up a lead right up until the final buzzer.
