Furman’s Sydney Ryan named SoCon player of the week
Junior guard logged three double doubles
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Sydney Ryan has been named Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played Nov. 26-Dec. 2, after averaging 18 points and 11.3 rebounds per game as the Paladins went 2-1 last week at Georgia State’s Thanksgiving Tournament. This award is selected by the league office.
Ryan started her week with a 12-point, 12-rebound performance against Campbell on Nov. 26. The next day, she led the Paladins with 24 points, a career high against a Division I opponent, and 12 rebounds in a 85-74 win against Georgia State. A junior, Ryan connected on 5 of her 9 3-point attempts and shot 50 percent from the paint.
In the final game of the tournament against Purdue Fort Wayne, Ryan drained a game tying, buzzer beating, fall-away 3-pointer from the deep corner under pressure to send the game to overtime. The Nashville, Tennessee, product registered 18 points and 10 rebounds in the Paladins’ 88-84 victory. For the tournament, Ryan shot 47.1 percent in the paint, 47.8 percent from beyond the arc and 78.6 percent at the line.
Furman (6-3) travels to Elon on Wednesday before hosting Charleston Southern on Sunday.
