SoCon Women’s Basketball Championship Game to be Broadcast on ESPNU

Championship to be shown nationally for the first time in league history

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced Monday that the women’s final of the Ingles Southern Conference Basketball Tournament will be broadcast on ESPNU.  The game will take place on Sunday, March 10th  at noon. The announcement comes two weeks ahead of the SoCon Women’s Basketball tournament.

“This national broadcast of the Ingles SoCon Women's Basketball Championship is a historic first for the SoCon and we are excited to showcase the exceptional talent and competitive spirit of our women’s basketball teams on national television,” SoCon Commissioner Michael Cross said. “SoCon women's basketball produced victories against SEC and ACC opponents this year and we are honored and appreciative that ESPN has recognized the quality of our programs.”

“We look forward to highlighting the achievements, dedication, and intense competition of Southern Conference Women's Basketball on their linear network.”

The tournament is set to begin on March 7th at the Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville, North Carolina. The quarterfinals will take place on Thursday starting with the No. 1 seed playing the No. 8 seed at 11 a.m. followed by the No. 2 seed versus the No. 7 seed. Later that day the No. 3 seed will play the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed will round out the day facing the No. 5 seed. The winners of these games will then play in the semifinals on Friday at 11a.m. or 1:15 p.m.

Last year Wofford entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed with Chattanooga coming in as the second seed. In the championship game, the Mocs were led by Freshman of the Year and tournament Most Outstanding Player Raven Thompson, who scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds in a 63-53 defeat of the Terriers. Chattanooga has won a record 19 titles since the tournament’s inception in 1984.

Chattanooga currently leads the conference with a 10-0 record after going undefeated in the first round of conference play. Boasting a 22-3 overall record, the Mocs pulled off the upset against then No. 22 Mississippi State on Dec. 3, 59-53. Chattanooga leads the conference as a team in scoring defense, field goal percentage, three-point percentage and free throw percentage.

Games taking place on Thursday, March 7 and Friday March 8 will be streamed on ESPN+.

Following the women’s final on the 10th, the two men’s tournament semifinal games will also be carried on ESPNU, beginning at 4 p.m.
