SoCon announces indoor track and field athletes of the week

Three schools honored with weekly awards

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Cameron Ponder and VMI’s Rafe Clendenin have been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively, while Furman’s Lily Feingold and ETSU’s Diana Romero-Barba claimed women’s track and field athlete of the week honors, respectively, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from Jan. 24-30.

Ponder competed in the 3000m on Saturday at the Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Winston-Salem, North Carolina, native logged a time of 7:53.93, becoming the top collegiate finisher in the Elite race which featured four professional runners and four collegiate runners. Ponder has a nine-second conference lead in the event.

Competing at the VMI Invitational in Lexington, Virginia, on Saturday, Clendenin set a personal record in the shot put with a throw of 14.98m. The true freshman now ranks second in the SoCon in his first year of throwing the 16-pound shot put.

Furman’s Feingold competed in the Bob Pollock Invitational in Clemson, South Carolina, on Friday. The junior from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, made her indoor 5000m debut finishing first with a time of 17:22, the fastest in the SoCon this season.

ETSU’s Romero-Barba competed at the Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Friday, winning third place in the Pole Vault with a height of 3.65m. The Jalisco, Mexico, product’s performance set a new season best and indoor personal record. She now sits in second place in the conference in the event.

The weekly awards are the first career indoor honors for Clendenin, Feingold, and Romero-Barba. Ponder’s award is the sixth indoor citation of his career.
