SoCon announces ITF athletes of the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Chris Knight and Samford’s Brenden Vanderpool have been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively. Additionally, ETSU’s Micailah Cook and Wofford’s Sherika Christie claimed women’s track and field athlete of the week honors, respectively, the conference office announced Wednesday.  

Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from Feb. 5-11. 

Knight competed in the Bruce Lehana Scarlet and White Invitational, hosted by Boston University on Feb. 8. Knight finished 23rd in the 3,000m with a time of 8:05.90. His performance ranks him first in the SoCon this season.  

On Feb. 7, Vanderpool won the pole vault at the UAB Invite, clearing 5.53m. With this performance, Vanderpool moved to 16th in the country in the event.   

During the Camel City Invitational, Cook finished third in the 200m with a time of 24.94. This time ranks third in the conference. Cook also competed in the 60m, recording a time of 7.73. This performance placed Cook fourth in the event and fourth in the conference.  

Christie won the women’s triple jump at the VMI Winter Classic. With a mark of 12.53m, Christie jumped to lead in the conference rankings. Christie also competed in the shot put, placing fourth with a mark of 12.07m.  

Samford and Wofford will compete at the Samford Bulldog Invite in Birmingham, Alabama, on Feb. 14-15. Furman returns to the competition in Boston, Massachusetts, for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Feb. 14-15. ETSU will travel to Lynchburg, Virginia, for the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational on Feb. 14 –15.
