Davidson Wins Women's Soccer Conference Title

GREENSBORO, N.C. - After nearly 109 minutes of scoreless play and with penalty kicks looming, Amanda Flink found the back of the net off a corner kick to give the Davidson women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over College of Charleston in the 2009 Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship match. It was the Wildcats' first conference championship since 1996.

Allison Drutchas took the corner kick for Davidson and found Flink, who headed the ball into the goal past the Cougars' keeper Katie Tate.  

The Wildcats held a 13-8 advantage in shots on goal and had a 5-0 lead in corner kicks. 

Blakely Low had a chance to give Davidson the win three minutes into the first overtime.  She picked up the ball at midfield and raced towards the CofC goal, but here shot sailed high above the crossbar. 

Davidson held a 10-7 advantage in shots through regulation.  Davidson's Jessie Baxa made four saves in regulation while CofC's Katie Tate made three stops in the games first 90 minutes

The Wildcats had a chance to convert a set piece midway through the second half.  Wildcat senior Kyri Bye-Nagel was taken down just outside the 18-yard box.  Allison Drutchas took the free kick but her shot skipped along the pitch left of the goal and out of play. 

Four minutes later Bye-Nagel sent a cross intended for Low which hit the crossbar and bounced away from the CofC goal.  Low had a scoring chance of her own with five minutes left that skipped wide of the net.

The Cougars nearly got on the board just 90 seconds into the match.  Morgan Benz lofted a shot on goal from 30 yards out that handcuffed Baxa who gave up a rebound. CofC's Hope Atkinson corralled the rebound and got a shot off but Baxa was able to recover and keep the game scoreless.

Davidson's best chance to get on the board in the first half came with 11 minutes remaining in the opening period.  Bye-Nagel dribbled through the Cougars' defense and fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that skipped just outside the left post.
