SoCon women’s soccer players of the week announced

Mercer’s Thomason and UNCG’s Malone honored

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer forward Larkin Thomason and UNCG goalkeeper Emma Malone have been named the Southern Conference women’s soccer offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition from Sept. 24-30.

Thomason, who also won the honor on Aug. 27, scored both goals for Mercer in its 2-0 win at ETSU on Sept. 29. The sophomore logged her first goal on the contest, which proved to be the game winner, in the eighth minute of the contest. In the 57th minute, the Scottsdale, Arizona, native found the back of the net again off a feed from Sara Engels. Thomason is currently third in the NCAA in points (24) and goals (11) this season.

Malone played the entire game inside the net for UNCG as the Spartans topped Chattanooga, 1-0, on Sept. 29. The junior from Wallingford, Connecticut, recorded five saves to grab her third shutout of the season. Malone is third in the SoCon in goals against average (1.05).

Mercer (7-3-2, 1-1-1 SoCon) hosts Chattanooga (2-6-3, 1-2-0) on Oct. 3, and VMI (5-5-1, 1-2-0) on Oct. 6. UNCG (3-5-3, 2-0-1) will welcome Wofford (5-6-1, 1-2-0) on Oct. 6.
