SoCon women’s soccer players of the week announced

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina forward Alexis DeMarco and Furman goalkeeper Reese DeJong have been named the Southern Conference women’s soccer offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition from Oct. 8-14.

DeMarco posted a brace over a 10-minute span in Western Carolina’s 6-1 win at Wofford on Oct. 13. The junior, who played 43 minutes in the game, scored the opening goal of the contest in the third minute off a feed from teammate Milla Syska. The native of Charleston, South Carolina, got her second goal in the 12th minute of the game. DeMarco became the fourth player from the Catamounts to be named the conference’s offensive player of the week this season.

DeJong played all 180 minutes inside the net for Furman last week, recording two shutouts for the Paladins in her first two SoCon starts. On Oct. 10, the freshman had four saves in a 1-0 win versus UNCG. Three days later, the product of Huntersville, North Carolina, finished with six saves, including a diving stop in the 80th minute, as Furman defeated ETSU, 1-0. DeJong is currently third in the SoCon in goals against average (1.32).

Western Carolina (10-2-2, 5-0-0 SoCon), who is on a seven-match winning streak, hosts ETSU (3-7-2, 2-3-1) on Oct. 17, before traveling to UNCG (4-6-4, 3-1-2) on Oct. 20. Furman (7-4-3, 3-0-2), who hasn’t suffered a defeat in its last nine games, welcomes Chattanooga (4-7-3, 3-3-0) on Oct. 17, and Wofford (5-9-1, 1-5-0) on Oct. 20.
