No. 1 Samford, No. 2 Furman advance to SoCon women's soccer final

Bulldogs and Paladins to meet in title match for third straight year after 1-0 semifinal wins

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – No. 1 seed Samford and No. 2 seed Furman each won semifinal matches at the Southern Conference Women’s Soccer Championship on their respective fields and will square off in the championship final on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 1 p.m. CT from Samford’s Shauna Yelton Field.

In the regular-season matchup, Samford downed Furman, 4-0, on Oct. 10 in Birmingham, Alabama.

After not meeting in the championship before 2019, the match will be the third straight championship between the Bulldogs and Paladins and is also the third straight that includes the top two seeds.

No. 1 Samford 1, No. 5 Mercer 0

No. 1 seed Samford downed No. 5 Mercer, 1-0, in the first semifinal game of the Southern Conference Women’s Soccer Championship.
Despite a few scoring opportunities for both squads, the lone goal in the contest came in the 89th minute. Senior midfielder Zoe Perrin found the back of the goal on an assist from Taylor Yount, an all-conference first-team forward.

The goal was Perrin’s fourth of the season, while the assist was the sixth of the year for Yount.

In total, Mercer finished with three shots, while Samford totaled 11. Jordyn Ebert, the Bears’ goalkeeper, finished with three saves and Morgan McAslan, Samford’s goalkeeper and a second-team all-conference selection, totaled a pair and earned her ninth shutout of the season as she improves to 14-3-2 in the 2021 campaign.
With the win, Samford improves to 14-3-2, while Mercer’s season ends at 7-6-5.

No. 2 Furman 1, No. 3 Western Carolina 0

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Furman Paladins, the No. 2 seed, got a goal from first-team all-conference forward Jasmine Greene in the 82nd minute that proved to be the difference-maker in a 1-0 win over No. 3 Western Carolina at Furman’s Stone Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Greene’s goal, her fifth of the season, came off a pass from Hannah Farr.

Western Carolina outshot Furman 14-7. Paladin goalkeeper Addison Corn recorded six saves in the shutout, her third of the season, while Catamount goalkeeper Ashlee Owens saved a pair of shots in the loss.

The appearance in the championship is Furman’s fourth straight (1-2) as the Paladins look to defend their 2020-21 title won in the spring in a close 2-1 double-overtime win over top-seeded Samford.

Furman, the preseason pick to win the league in voting by the 10 head coaches, improves to 12-5-1 with the win. Western Carolina’s season concludes at 11-8-1.
