SoCon women’s soccer players of the week announced

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina midfielder Naya Marcil and Mercer goalkeeper Lindsay Bell have been named the Southern Conference women’s soccer offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition from Oct. 1-7.

Marcil had five total points, including two game-winning goals, last week for Western Carolina as the Catamounts won a pair of conference matches. The senior scored a goal and had an assist in the team’s 5-0 win at VMI on Oct. 3. Marcil’s goal came in the ninth minute of the contest, while her assist was in the 61st minute when she found teammate Isabella DeMarco for a score. In the squad’s 4-0 win versus The Citadel on Oct. 6, the native of Saint-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada, scored the first goal of the game in the ninth minute. Marcil is currently fourth in the SoCon in points (16).

Bell, who also received the honor on Aug. 27, played all 180 minutes inside the net for the Bears last week, logging two shutouts in the process. On Oct. 3 against Chattanooga, the redshirt junior faced 24 shots, recording a career-high 11 saves in a 2-0 win. The Marietta, Georgia, product had another two saves on Oct. 6, as Mercer defeated VMI 1-0. Bell, who has logged three straight shutouts, is second in the conference in goals against average (0.79).

Western Carolina (9-2-2, 4-0-0 SoCon) plays at Wofford (5-7-1, 1-3-0) on Oct. 13. The Catamounts have not allowed a goal in nine straight games, last surrendering a goal on Aug. 25 versus Longwood. Mercer (9-3-2, 3-1-1) visits UNCG (4-5-3, 3-0-1) on Oct. 13.
