Wednesday's Women's Tennis Results First Round Recaps

No. 7 Appalachian State 4, No. 10 Western Carolina 1

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Appalachian State claimed a 4-1 victory over Western Carolina Wednesday afternoon in the 2014 Southern Conference Championship at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.  The Mountaineers earned the doubles point and picked up three victories in singles play to claim the win.

Wins at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles gave the Mountaineers the doubles point.   Appalachian State’s Megan Mullen and Brianna Armellino topped Sara Ruiz Pajares and Erin Maguire, 8-0, at the No. 3 spot before Gabrielle Wreder and Mackenzie LaSure downed Stacia Kissell and Shannon Bettiol at No. 1 by an 8-4 score.

Western Carolina drew even in the match as Stacia Kissell knocked off Clare Cox at the No. 1 position, 6-2, 6-1.  From there the Mountaineers reeled off three straight wins to claim the match.

Jessica Thaggard blanked Nicole Nielly (6-0, 6-0) at No. 5, while Brianna Armellino won a straight-sets match over Sara Ruiz Pajares (6-0, 6-4) at No. 4 singles to give the Mountaineers a 3-0 lead. 

Gabrielle Wreder gave the Mountaineers their fourth point of the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 3 over Megan McLinden.

The Mountaineers advance to face Samford in Thursday’s quarterfinals. 

 

No. 9 Wofford 4, No. 8 Davidson 3

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – No. 9 Wofford upset eight-seeded Davidson, 4-3 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tennis Tournament at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Wednesday. The Terriers got a win (6-1, 2-6, 6-4) from Catherine Martin at No.4 over Davidson’s Sarah Stein to clinch the first round victory.

The Wildcats earned an 8-2 win from Brites Moniz-Soares and Elaina Cummer at No. 1 doubles and an 8-4 victory from Jenna Brunner and Nisha Crouser at No. 2 doubles to take the doubles point and an early 1-0 advantage.

Moniz-Soares topped Wofford’s Sarah Evans in straight sets at No. 1 (6-2, 6-1) to add to the Davidson advantage before Tamara Hill defeated Taylor Carlson 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 to make it 3-0 in favor of the Wildcats.

Wofford’s Julia Paulson put the Terriers on the board with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Crouser at No. 3 before teammate Audrey Coventry pulled off a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Cummer at No. 2 to push the score to 3-2. Kallie Karas knotted things up at 3 with a 6-4, 7-6 at No. 5 before Martin finished off the 4-3 comeback win for Wofford.

The Terriers advance to face No. 1 Furman in the Thursday's quarterfinals.
