Elon and CofC Advance to Sunday's Women's Final

ELON, N.C. – Top-seeded College of Charleston advanced to Sunday’s title match of the 2013 Southern Conference Tennis Championship with a 4-0 victory over No. 4 UNCG.
The Cougars took the opening point in the match by taking two of three doubles matches. UNCG’s Niltooli Wilkins and Alex Whitehead won the No. 1 doubles matchup with an 8-4 victory over Irene Viana and Katherine Schofield. College of Charleston responded by earning victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions.
Kelly Kambourelis and Jenny Falcone topped Annette Rios and Kayla Gammie, 8-3 at No. 2. With the double point hanging in the balance, Samantha Maddox and Christin Newman held off Stephanie Falcon and Dilara Yurtkuran, 9-7.
College of Charleston picked up three consecutive singles victories to claim the 4-0 win. Katherine Schofield topped Kayla Gammie, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6 singles to give the Cougars a 2-0 win. Jenny Falcone put CofC ahead 3-0 in the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Annette Rios at No. 4 singles. Brooke McAmis clinched the match for the Cougars with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Alex Whitehead at the No. 3 position.
Sunday’s championship match is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.

ELON, N.C. – The Elon Phoenix defeated Furman, 4-0, in one semifinal of the 2013 Southern Conference Tournament Saturday. With the win, Elon advances to face top-seeded College of Charleston in Sunday’s championship match.
The Phoenix claimed the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Elon’s Briana Berne and Taylor Casey defeated Furman’s Kelly Sullivan and Margaret Boyette, 8-6 at No. 3 before Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansaker held off Alex Moreno-Kaste and Lauren Kline, 9-7.
Elon’s Jordan Johnston pushed the Phoenix ahead 2-0 in the match with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Lauren Kline at No. 1 singles. Maria Camara Ruiz posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kelly Sullivan at No. 6 to give Elon a 3-0 advantage before Frida Jansaker closed out the match for the Phoenix with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Alex Moreno-Kaste at No. 2 singles.
Elon moves to 21-3 on the season with Saturday’s victory, while Furman closes the year at 14-9.
