ETSU Beats Samford To Take Women's Tennis Title

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The second-seeded ETSU women’s tennis team captured the program’s first Southern Conference Championship on Sunday, downing No. 4 seed Samford 4-0 at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Bucs will move on to the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships via the SoCon’s automatic berth.

Strong doubles play gave the Bucs a 1-0 lead in the match.  Regina Nychytailova and Melissa Esguerra tooka 6-3 win over Savannah Wood and Georgina Jupp at No. 3 while Marina Espana and Ioanna Markesini also won 6-3 at No. 2 over Ellie Gerlach and Annika Hepp.

Lyn Yee Choo gave the Bucs a 2-0 lead in the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jessica Northcutt at No. 1 singles. Next, Ana Gerbasi took a 6-2, 6-4 decision on court six over Jupp, and Markesini was swarmed by her teammates after sealing the title match with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Wood at No. 3.

Choo was named the tournament's Most Oustanding Player.

Court one doubles and courts two, four and five in singles did not finish.

ETSU (20-2) will now await its draw in the NCAA tournament, which will be announced Tuesday, May 3, at 5 p.m. (EST).
