Samford, Chattanooga and Georgia Southern Advance to Day Two

BURLINGTON, N.C. – The seventh-seeded Georgia Southern Eagles (10-11) came away with a 4-2 victory over 10th-seeded Wofford (5-17) today, April 18, at the Burlington Tennis Center.
In doubles play, GSU grabbed a 1-0 lead after claiming victories at No. 2 and then at No. 1. Stephanie Woods and Natalie Maffett defeated Julia Paulson and Lucy Schermerhorn, 8-3, before the Eagles grabbed the point with an 8-4 win by Paola Garrido and Mary Phillips Smith won over Sarah Evans and Othilia Lindqvist.
Wofford got on the board with a win at No. 3 as Paulson defeated Woods, 6-2, 6-0. After Schermerhorn picked up a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Francisca Norregaard at No. 6, the Terriers took its first lead of the match, 2-1.
The Eagles evened the score and regained the lead, 3-2, after victories at No. 3 and No. 1. Smith defeated Guinn Garcia, 6-4, 6-3, on court three, while Garrido took the win over Evans, 7-6 (4), 6-1, in the top spot.
At No. 2, Wofford’s Audrey Coventry won the first set over Jordana Klein, 7-6 (3), before Klein came back to take the last two sets, 6-2, 6-3, to win the match for GSU.
The Eagles will take on second-seeded Elon tomorrow, April 19, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
No. 6 Chattanooga 4, No. 11 Western Carolina 0

BURLINGTON, N.C. – The No. 6 seeded Chattanooga Lady Mocs (18-4) swept No. 11 Western Carolina (1-16), 4-0, in the first round of the 2013 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championships Thursday, April 18, at the Burlington Tennis Center.
Because Western only had five available players, the Lady Mocs won by default at No. 3 before Alexa Flynn and Kelsey Coots defeated Stacia Kissell and Shannon Bettiol, 8-1, at No. 1 to give UTC the doubles point.
Chattanooga won by default at the No. 6 position to take a 2-0 lead at the start of singles play. At No. 3, Coots posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Nicole Nially before Jones clinched the match at No. 1 over Kissell, 6-2, 6-2.
The Lady Mocs will face the No. 3 seed Furman at 11 a.m. tomorrow, April 19, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C.
No. 8 Samford 4, No. 9 Davidson 1

BURLINGTON, N.C. – The eighth-seeded Samford Bulldogs (9-14) defeated the ninth-seeded Davidson Wildcats (9-12), 4-1, in the first round of the 2013 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championship Thursday, April 18, at the Burlington Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs captured the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead after claiming victories at No. 1 and No. 3. Kristin Lewis and Emily Mallory defeated Brites Moniz-Soares and Elaina Cummer, 8-3, before Carita Moolman and Adri Lochner took the win, 8-3, over Catherine Wood and Elise Held.
In singles play, Stephanie N’tcha put Samford ahead by two after taking down Cummer, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2. Emily Mallory then posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 over Wood to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.
At No. 1, Moniz-Soares kept the Wildcats alive with a strong 6-2, 6-1 win over Lewis. Samford clinched the match and a spot in the quarterfinals after AnnMarie Lyon posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Held at No. 6.
The Bulldogs will move on to play top-seeded College of Charleston tomorrow, April 19, at 8 a.m. at Elon’s Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
