Friday's Women's Tennis Semifinal Results

#4 Samford 4, #1 Furman 3

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - In a back-and-forth match Saturday afternoon Samford claimed a 4-3 win over top-seeded Furman Paladins in the semifinal of the 2016 Southern Conference Women's Tennis Tournament.

Savannah Wood's three-set victory over Blair Martin at No.3 singles gave the Bulldogs the team win.

The Paladins won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead.  Karlee Bryde and Harper Caswell earned a 6-2 win over Wood and Georgina Jupp at No. 3 doubles before Furman's No. 2 team of Martin and Gabby Rodriguez defeated Ellie Gerlach and Annika Hepp, 6-3.   

The Bulldogs (12-11) took the first two singles matches with wins at No. 2 and No. 6.  Carita Moolman topped Katarina Weymouth at No. 2 (6-2, 6-2) and Georgina Jupp downed Caswell (6-3, 7-5).

Furman (15-9) then surged ahead 3-2 with wins at No. 1 and No. 4.  Ansley Speaks recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jessica Northcutt at the top singles position, while Bryde beat Gerlach, 6-2, 6-4.

The Bulldogs tied the match at three-all with Hepp's 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 victory over Rodriguez at No. 6.

 

 

# 2 ETSU 4, #3 Chattanooga 0

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - ETSU earned a 4-0 decision over Chattanooga Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the 2016 Southern Conference Tennis Tournament at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.

After winning the doubles point, second-seeded ETSU (19-2) picked up wins at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to claim the team victory.

Melissa Esguerra staked ETSU to a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Katie Polk at No. 5.  Lyn Yee Choo gave the Bucs a 3-0 advantage with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Kayla Jones at the top singles spot.  Marina Espana then clinched the match for ETSU with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Alison Storie at No. 4.

The Bucs advance to Sunday's title match, while Chattanooga closes its season at 15-8. 

Sunday's title match will be a rematch of the 2015 final in which the Bulldogs held off ETSU, 4-1.
