Saturday's Women's Tennis Championships Results

#1 UNCG 4, #5 Chattanooga 0

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Top-seeded UNCG swept the No. 5 seed Chattanooga Mocs 4-0 to earn a spot in the Southern Conference women's title game set for Sunday afternoon at the College of Charleston Tennis Center.  Following the doubles point, UNCG earned wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 to claim the team win.

The Spartans won the doubles point by taking two of three decisions.  Niltooli Wilkins and Lucy Dougherty cruised past Alexa Flynn and Kaylene Chadwell 8-1 at the top doubles spot, but the Lady Mocs struck back with an 8-4 victory at No. 3 from Jenna Nurik and Claire Mulyadi.  All eyes turned to court two where Alex Whitehead and Devon Sutherland outlasted Shaina Singh and Emily Hangstefer 9-7.

Southern Conference Player of the Year Niltooli Wilkins came away with a straight sets win over Jenna Nurk 6-0, 6-3 to push the Spartans ahead 2-0.  Dilara Yurtkuran then finished a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Alexa Flynn at No. 3 to give UNCG a 3-0 lead.

Stephanie Falcon was then able to outlast Emily Hangstefer in three sets 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 to give the Mocs the win.

The Spartans improve to 17-5 on the season while Chattanooga ends the year 16-5.

#2 College of Charleston 5, #3 Furman 0

The College of Charleston Cougars downed Furman 5-0 Saturday afternoon to earn a berth in Sunday's Southern Conference Women's Tennis Tournament Championship match.

Due to inclement weather, the match was moved to the Charleston Tennis Center and began with singles play.

The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the strength of wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.  Jenny Falcone topped Alex Moreno-Kate 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 while Katie Lee beat Amanda Murray 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.

College of Charleston's Kelly Kambourelis rallied after dropping the first set to pull out a three-set victory over Michel Stanford at No. 2 (1-6, 6-1, 6-4).

With the Cougars (24-5) holding a 3-0 lead in the match, CofC picked up two points almost instantaneously to earn the win.  Samantha Maddox battled for a three-set victory over Margaret Boyette (6-4, 5-7, 6-4) at No. 4 and Christin Newman beat Lauren Kline 7-5, 7-5 at No. 1 seconds later to give the Cougars the win.

CofC will look for its fourth consecutive Southern Conference tournament championship Sunday when the Cougars take on UNCG.  Furman ends its season 14-10.
