Southern Conference Women's Tennis Championships Day Two Concludes

 

 

Appalachian State 4, Wofford 3

 

CHARLESTON, SC ? Fifth-seeded Appalachian State defeated fourth-seeded Wofford, 4-3, in the quarterfinals of the 2006 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championships. The Mountaineers improve to 12-6 while the Terriers conclude the 2006 season at 13-11.

 

Wofford took the early advantage, as it gained the doubles point to start the match, with victories at the No. 1 and No.2 positions . Ellen Rogers and Tara Hartness defeated Anja Gugger and Lyndsey Free 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, while Adriane Hodges and Ashley Page defeated Monica Thomas and Francis Blanton 8-4 at the No. 2 position to give Wofford the 1-0 advantage.

 

In singles play, Appalachian State’s Monica Thomas defeated Tara Hartness 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 at the No.2 position, while Victoria Moody defeated Cayley Wetzig 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 3 position. Lyndsey Free won 6-1,6-2 over Ashley Pages at the No. 5 position and the match-deciding point came down to the No. 6 position, in which Frances Blanton picked up a 7-5,1-6, 6-2 over Wofford’s Lauren Prickett to clinch the match for Appalachian.     

 

Appalachian will now take on Furman in seminal action of the 2006 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championships at Farmfield Tennis Center, set to begin at 10:00 a.m.

CHARLESTON, SC ? Top-seeded Furman defeated ninth-seeded Chattanooga 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2006 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championships. The Lady Paladins improve to 16-6 while the Lady Mocs conclude the 2006 season at 11-14.

 

Furman took the doubles point to start off the match. Jacqueline Eckert and Lauren Osborne picked up an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles over Maureen Paris and Bonnie Adams. Shannon Moore and Lisa Bornt-Davis clinched the doubles point for the Lady Paladins with an 8-2 win over Talita Bragato and Beata Knizat at No. 3 doubles.

 

In singles action, Osborne defeated Adams at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-0, while Bonnie Baird topped Knizat 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 position. Moore picked up the final point of the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Bragato at No. 4 singles.

 

Furman will take on the winner of Appalachian State/Wofford at 10:00 a.m. at the Farmfield Tennis Center.

CHARLESTON, SC ? Second-seeded Davidson defeated seventh-seeded Georgia Southern, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the 2006 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championships. The Wildcats improve to 17-8 while the Eagles conclude the 2006 season at 7-15.

 

Davidson took command of the match early, as Michlele Fanney and Lindsey Powell defeated Szilvia Zsakay and Jessica Matlosz 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. Meanwhile, Kate Levitt and Lora Dushanova registered an 8-1 victory at the No. 3 doubles position to give Davidson the doubles point.  

 

In singles play, Davidson’s Kelsey Linville defeated Szilvia Zsakay 6-0, 6-2, while Meredith Skeeters defeated Heather Reynolds 6-1, 6-1 to help Davidson assume control of the match in singles action. Lora Dushanova closed out the match for the Wildcats with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Shea Huxtable at the No.6 position to give Davidson the 4-0 victory      

 

Davidson now moves on to face the winner of the College of Charleston/UNC Greensboro match in the semifinals of the 2006 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championships, with the first serve set for 10 a.m. at Farmfield Tennis Center in Charleston, SC.

CHARLESTON, SC ? Third-seeded College of Charleston defeated sixth-seeded UNC Greensboro,4-1, in the quarterfinals of the 2006 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championships. The Cougars improve to 13-10 while the Spartans conclude the 2006 season at 7-16.

 

The College of Charleston started off the match well, earning the doubles point to by virtue of wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Payten Ellington and Chelsea Albertz defeated Emily Wade and Erica Zabkar 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, while Maxine Capewell and Ashley Finnegan won an 8-3 decision at the No. 2 position.

 

In singles action, the Cougars recorded victories at the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions to put away the Spartans. Ashley Finnegan defeated Lourdas Maron 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4, while Payten Ellington recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win over Sophie Rychik at No. 5. Jenna Marks’ 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sarah Templeton sealed the win for the Cougars.      

 

The College of Charleston will now move on to face Davidson in the semifinals of the 2006 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championships at the Farmfield Tennis Center in Charleston, SC, with the first serve set for 10 am.
