Western Carolina’s Groen named SoCon player of the week
Junior went 4-0 against Chattanooga and Mercer

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina’s Jade Groen has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played from April 1-7, the conference announced on Tuesday. The award is selected by the league office.
Groen went 4-0 for the week as Western Carolina defeated Chattanooga and Mercer to register its best conference start in program history. On Tuesday April 1 against Chattanooga, Groen paired with Chloe Schwarz at the No. 1 doubles position and beat Rozalie Dohnalova and Alice Hall, 6-3. In singles play, the Zoetermeer, Netherlands, product defeated Madlena Orlova at court one, 6-1, 6-0.
Against Mercer on April 5, the junior again teamed up with Schwarz as the pair triumphed over Marina Quinones and Ines Homberg, 6-1. At the No. 1 singles court, Groen posted a straight set victory against Quinones, 6-2, 6-1. This is her third Player of the Week distinction this season, with the first two coming on Feb. 4 and March 4.
Western Carolina (14-7, 4-1), will host ETSU on Tuesday, April 8, then finish the regular season at Wofford on Saturday, April 12.
