CofC, UNCG, Elon and Furman Advance to Semifinals

ELON, N.C. – With the team score tied at 3-3, down one match to none in doubles, the Furman women’s team rallied back on Wednesday, defeating Elon, 4-3, in a thrilling quarterfinal match at the Southern Conference Tournament at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C.

Due to the threat of inclement weather, the match began with singles play instead of doubles.  Following the singles tie, Kayla Jones and Katie Polk recorded an 8-3 win over sophomore Kelly Sullivan and junior Margaret Boyette at flight three, leaving the Mocs just one doubles victory shy of the win.

The teams battled back and forth at flights one and two doubles, eventually settling in at 7-7 in both matches.  Senior Lauren Kline and sophomore Alex Moreno-Kaste pushed the tie to 8-8 at flight one and headed to a tiebreaker versus Alexa Flynn and Kelsey Coots.  Meanwhile, at flight two, senior Michele Stanford and junior Amanda Murray won consecutive games to defeat Jenna Nurik and Kaylene Chadwell, 9-7.  In the decisive flight one match, the Paladins came through for the victory in the tiebreaker, 7-5.

In singles action, Sullivan collected a quick 6-3, 6-2 win over Polk at flight six to put the Paladins on the board, but Coots evened the score after posting a 6-2, 6-1 victory versus Murray at number five.  Jones pushed the Mocs ahead, 2-1, after defeating junior Katherine Oudin, 7-5, 7-5, at flight three.

Stanford knotted the score at two-apiece, coming from behind to defeat Flynn, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, at number four, then Nurik swung the momentum toward Chattanooga with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 advantage versus Kline in the top singles match-up.  Moreno-Kaste tied the match at 3-all after beating Chadwell, 7-5, 4-6, 6-0, at number two, to force the doubles point.

Furman (14-8, 8-2 SoCon) will face second-seeded Elon Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.  
 

No. 2 Elon 4, No. 7 Georgia Southern 0

ELON, N.C. – The second-seeded Elon Phoenix (20-3) won its ninth straight match and its 20th of the season with a 4-0 victory over seventh-seeded Georgia Southern (10-11) in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championship today, April 19. Due to the threat of inclement weather, singles matches were played first.
 
At No. 3, Bryn Khoury claimed the first point of the match for Elon with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Mary Phillips Smith. The Phoenix took a 2-0 lead after Frida Jansaker posted a win over Jordana Klein, 6-1, 6-1, at the second position.
 
Viviana Stravreva defeated Stephanie Woods, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 to put the maroon and gold one match away victory. A 6-2, 6-3 win for Barbora Lazarova on court five over Natalie Maffett clinched the match and a spot in the semifinals for Elon.
 
 

No. 1 College of Charleston 4, No. 8 Samford 0

ELON, N.C. – Top-seeded College of Charleston (18-8) took down eighth-seeded Samford (9-14), 4-0, today, April 19, in quarterfinals of the 2013 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championship. The Cougars claimed all four points in singles play, which took place first due to the chance of inclement weather.

Katherin Schofield gave the Cougars its first point of the match with a win over AnnMarie Lyon, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 6. Kelly Kambourelis defeated Stephanie N’tcha, 6-4, 6-2, in the second spot moments before Brooke McAmis put CofC up 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Jessica Northcutt at No. 3.

The match was won for the Cougars at the No. 1 position by Christin Newman, who posted a 6-1, 6-4 win against Kristin Lewis.

The Cougars move on to the tournament semifinals and will play UNCG tomorrow, April 20, at 10 a.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

 

No. 4 UNCG 4, No. 5 Appalachian State 0

ELON, N.C. – The fourth-seeded UNCG Spartans (15-4) claimed a 4-0 victory over the fifth-seeded Appalachian State Mountaineers (6-15) in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championship today, April 19, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Due to the chance of inclement weather, singles matches were played first. Anette Rios claimed the first point of the match for the Spartans with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Jennifer Ansari ant No. 4. Alex Whitehead gave UNCG a 2-0 lead after defeating Brianna Armellino, 6-2, 6-3, at the third spot.

Nitooli Wilkins added another point for the Spartans after a 6-3, 6-4 win over Ellie Linsell in the top spot. Dilara Yurtkuran clinched the match and a spot in the semifinals for the Spartans with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 2.

UNCG will face top-seeded College of Charleston tomorrow, April 20, at 10 a.m. at the JPTC.
