Women's Tennis Semifinals Set

#3 UNC Greensboro 4, #6 Elon 2
ELON, NC ? Third-seeded UNC Greensboro edged 6th-seeded Elon 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Southern Conference Tennis Championship Friday morning. The Spartans advance to the semifinals to take on second-seeded College of Charleston at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on the Elon University campus.
Elon’s Elisa Simonetti and Whitney Butcher won the first match of the doubles session, 8-5 over Jessica Eblen and Britney Cloer. UNCG’s Valerie Behr and Lucy Dougherty defeated Hayley Wahl and Daleen Kloppers to tie the doubles at one each. Alejandra Guerra and Arielle VonStrolley topped Anna Milian and Pagie Kensrue 8-5 to clinch the doubles point.
UNCG took a 2-0 lead when Dougherty defeated Laura Graybill 6-0, 6-0 at #5 singles. Elon cut the lead to one with a 6-3, 6-4 win by Kensrue over Behr at the #2 spot. At #1 singles, Guerra topped Milian 6-4, 6-4 to take a 3-1 lead, followed by an Elon win at #4 by Lauren Sessoms.
VonStrolley and Simonetti battled in the first set at #3 with VonStrolley winning it 7-5. She led 5-1 in the second set and fought off a 5-4 comeback by Simonetti to win the match 6-4 and clinch the UNCG win.
Eblen and Elon’s Hayley Wahl split sets at #6 singles with Eblen winning the first set 6-3 and Wahl winning the second 7-6 (11-9 in the tiebreaker). Wahl led 3-2 when the match was called.
UNCG improves to 15-5 while Elon concludes its season at 13-12.
#2 College of Charleston 4, #7 Samford 0
ELON, NC ? Second-seeded College of Charleston topped 7th-seeded Samford in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Southern Conference Tennis Championship Friday afternoon. The Cougars advance to take on the winner of the Elon-UNC Greensboro match which is also being played Friday morning.
College of Charleston’s Laura Borza and Anna Lee Evans clinched the doubles point for the Cougars with an 8-3 win over Taylor Morgan and Stephanie Parkison at the #1 position. Samford picked up a doubles win at #2 with Andrie Meiring and Jessica Diamond topping Keely Mulligan and Kinsey Casey 8-4.
CofC’s Keely Mulligan started the singles off with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Samford’s Beth Erwin at the #5 position, giving the Cougars a 3-0 lead. Borza clinched the match for Charleston with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Taylor Morgan at #1 singles.
College of Charleston improves its record to 22-4 with Samford ending its season at 7-13.
#1 Furman 4, #9 Chattanooga 0
ELON, NC ? Top-seeded Furman topped 9th-seeded Chattanooga 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Southern Conference Tennis Championship Friday morning. The Paladin advance to take on the winner of the Georgia Southern-Davidson match which is also being played this morning.
Furman picked up the doubles point with wins at #1 and #3. Jessica Preeg picked up the first singles win for Furman, 6-0, 6-0 over Charlotte Bossy at #4 singles. The Paladins wrapped up the match with straight-set wins from Laura Gioia and Susan Betitti.
#5 Davidson 4, #4 Georgia Southern 1
ELON, NC ? Fifth-seeded Davidson topped 4th-seeded Georgia Southern 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Southern Conference Tennis Championship Friday morning. The Wildcats advance to the semifinals to take on top-seeded Furman at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on the Elon University campus.
Davidson picked up the doubles point at the #1 and #2 positions. Virginia Berry added the first singles win for the Wildcats at #2 singles, followed by wins by Lora Dushanova and Michele Fanney. Georgia Southern’s Melanie Rolle added a point for the Eagles, topping Ali Gores 6-1, 6-2 at #4 singles.
