<a href="https://woffordterriers.com/news/2024/12/6/volleyball-falls-in-ncaa-tournament-at-baylor.aspx" target="_self">No. 1 Baylor 3, Wofford 0</a>The Wofford volleyball team left it all on the court Thursday night in the Ferrell Center in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, but the Terriers fell in three sets (11-25, 11-25, 18-25) to the No.4 seeded Baylor Bears. The Terriers conclude their historic season at 23-9 while Baylor improves to 23-7.

 "It was a great experience to make the NCAA Tournament," said head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://woffordterriers.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/coaches/lynze-roos/1308">Lynze Roos</a>.  Ekes recorded a match-high 13 kills, her 29th match this season posting double-digit kills.&nbsp;<a href="https://mercerbears.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/sophia-henry/11025">Sophia Henry</a>&nbsp;hit .278 with six kills at the net while&nbsp;<a href="https://mercerbears.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/meme-davis/11024">MeMe Davis</a>&nbsp;put up 12 digs and added four assists from the back row.&nbsp;<a href="https://mercerbears.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/brooke-phillips/11057">Brooke Phillips</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://mercerbears.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/sammi-bergjans/11027">Sammi Bergjans</a>&nbsp;combined for 23 assists throughout the three sets played.

 The Bears left their mark on the record book this season coming away as the first outright regular season conference champions, winningest team in program history, first time in program history to go undefeated at home, first conference player and setter of the year awards, led the NCAA in service aces and received their first postseason tournament invite.&nbsp;

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In an instant classic, the Wofford Terriers (23-8), the No. 2 seed, won the 2024 Southern Conference Volleyball Championship in five sets (22-25, 22-25, 25-16, 26-24, 16-14) over top seed Mercer, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship on Sunday afternoon inside Wofford’s Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.Sunday’s match marked the second time in nine days the two squads played a five-set match against one another as Mercer was victories in Macon on Nov. 15. Sunday’s contest was also the first SoCon tournament title match to last five sets since 2019.The two teams opened the match splitting the first 20 points. Wofford became the first squad to lead by more than one point following a 3-point run, making the score 13-10 which led to a timeout by Mercer. The Bears came out of the break on a run, taking the lead at 16-15 following three straight kills from first-team all-conference selection Skyler Bumpers, prompting a timeout by Wofford.Mercer would get within two points of ending the set as a kill by all-freshman team performer Sophia Henry made the score 23-20, forcing a Terrier timeout. After the break, the two teams split the final four points of the frame, with the set ending on Bumpers’ 10th kill. The Bears won the first set 25-22, taking a 1-0 lead in the contest.With the Terriers ahead 4-3 in the second set, the Bears scored five straight points, punctuated by a block from Bumpers. Following a timeout by Wofford, the score would eventually be tied 10-10 after a solo block from Annemarie Rakoski. The Terriers carried that momentum to a 12-11 lead after an attack error by the Bears. Back-to-back attack errors by Mercer made the score 16-14 in favor of Wofford, forcing a timeout by the Bears.The score would go on to be tied at 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22 as the set entered crunch time. Mercer would then score three straight points off a kill by Henry, an attack error from Wofford and a kill from Bumpers, ending the frame at 25-22.Wofford began the third set with a flurry, going ahead 4-0 to start the frame. The Terriers led 15-10 at the media timeout, following a block by Bradley Brown and Natalie Arnold. Wofford’s lead would grow to 20-10 with Mary Emily Morgan on the service line before the Bears forced a side-out.The Terriers would not let their lead get below eight points for the remainder of the set. The frame would eventually end 25-16 after a kill from Morgan, sending the match into the fourth set.In the fourth set, the two squads split the first 20 points. The score remained tight over the next nine points as Mercer carried a 15-14 lead into the media timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Bears built on their lead, going ahead 19-16 on a kill by SoCon Setter of the Year Brooke Phillips, prompting a timeout by Wofford.A service error by Mercer made its lead 20-19, but the Bears score the next two points, punctuated by a block from Henry and Joselynn Sanjurjo, forcing a Terriers timeout. Following the break, Wofford got a kill from Arnold and a block from Rakoski and Bri Mahoney, prompting a timeout by the Bears.After an attack error by Mercer tied the score at 22-22, the Bears got two straight points to get to championship point. Wofford would not go quietly, scoring the next four points to win the set, 26-24, to force a deciding set.Mercer drew first blood in the fifth set, going ahead 6-3 after an attack error by Wofford. Three points later, a kill by Henry made the score 8-4 and the teams switched sides of the net. After another Henry kill moved the score to 9-5, the Terriers took a timeout.The Bears scored the first point out of the timeout, but the Terriers responded with three straight points off their own, prompting a timeout from Mercer. Wofford would eventually tie the set at 11-11 following a solo block by Morgan, leading to the Bears taking their final timeout.After splitting the next four points, a kill from Brown made the score 14-13 in favor of Wofford. Bumpers got a kill to tie the score at 14 but kills from Mahoney and Rakoski ended the set at 16-14, giving the Terriers the championship.The match featured 42 ties and 16 lead changes. Sarah MacLean, the 2024 SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Player, finished with eight kills and three blocks. MacLean had a total of 37 kills over the tournament. Morgan had a double-double, logging 11 kills and a team-high 19 digs. Mercer advances to the SoCon championship match for the first time since the 2020-21 season. A win for the Bears on Sunday will give them their first SoCon tournament title in program history.Mercer began the match with a 7-2 run, forcing an early timeout from The Citadel. After another point for the Bears, the Bulldogs worked their way back into the frame, getting to within one at 15-14 after an error. Mercer would side-out on the next point, carrying that into a 20-15 lead following an ace by first-team all-conference selection Skyler Bumpers.Following a timeout, the Bulldogs scored five of the next six points to get within one at 21-20. Mercer responded by scoring the next four points to win the set 25-20, punctuated by a kill from Gia Padilla.Mercer began the second set the same way it began the first, jumping out to an 8-2 advantage. The Bears would eventually get out to a 14-2 lead with MeMe Davis, a member of the all-freshman and second team all-conference teams, on the service line. The Bulldogs answered back, scoring six of the next eight points to force a timeout by Mercer.The Bears regained control of the frame, keeping their lead above four points the rest of the set. Wofford will be playing for its second consecutive conference tournament title on Sunday.The two teams were even through 28 points before Wofford got a kill from second-team all-conference selection Mary Emily Morgan, making the score 15-14 in favor of the Terriers. The set went into a media timeout following the Morgan kill. A 3-1 run after the break by Wofford led to a timeout by ETSU.Wofford was able to keep control of the set after the Bucs timeout. An ace by Bri Mahoney put the Terriers two points away from victory at 23-18. Five points later, Morgan got a kill down the line to give Wofford a 25-21 set one victory.The second set was a tightly contested affair similar to the first. The Citadel advances to face the winner of No. 1 Mercer and No. 9 UNCG in the semifinals, slated for Saturday at 4 p.m. in Wofford’s Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.The Citadel scored the first points of the contest before Samford got on the board. The Citadel would keep up the pressure and after a kill and a block from Ali Ruffin made the score 11-5 in favor of The Citadel, Samford used its first timeout.The lead for The Citadel would grow to as many as nine after a bad set from Samford made the score 18-9. Samford responded with a run of its own and following a kill by first-team all-conference member Gracie Lynn Butler made the score 19-15, The Citadel took a timeout.The Citadel scored three straight out of the break to regain control of the frame. Sophia Childs would eventually get an ace to end the set at 25-16, giving The Citadel a 1-0 lead in the match.In the second set, The Citadel continued its steady play. After a service error from Samford made the score 13-10, Childs got a kill before combining with Sophia Gomez for a block to give The Citadel a five-point lead before the media timeout.Samford went on a run after the break to get back in the frame. A 4-0 run by Samford, which was punctuated by an ace from Ally Cordes, tied the set at 17-17, forcing a timeout from The Citadel.After the two squads split the next four points, Samford built its lead to 23-21, making The Citadel take a timeout. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s Skye Ekes was named the Southern Conference Volleyball Player of the Year for the 2024 season. ETSU’s Lindsey Devine was named SoCon Coach of the Year and Wofford sophomore Laney Klika was selected as SoCon Libero of the Year, while the Bears’ Brooke Phillips was named SoCon Setter of the Year. UNCG outside hitter Allie Sweet earned the Rayna Taylor Award, given annually to the league’s freshman of the year.The league’s coaches voted on a pair of all-conference teams, an all-freshman team and the five individual awards. They were not allowed to vote for themselves or their own players. The second team features an additional player due to a tie in the voting.Ekes claims the player of the year award after leading Mercer to a 14-2 mark in conference play en route to the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Volleyball Championship. The Sarasota, Florida native is second in the conference in kills (410), points (474.5) and kills per set (3.76). The senior was named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week once during the season. Ekes, who is a transfer from Florida State, helped lead Mercer to its first outright SoCon regular-season championship this season.Devine earned coach of the year honors after leading the Buccaneers to an 18-10 overall record, with the team going 8-2 over their last 10 regular season matches. Devine, who was the ETSU head coach from 2003-18, returned to Johnson City this season after coaching in SEC for four seasons, three with Alabama and one with Mississippi State. This season marks the third time that Devine was named the SoCon Coach of the Year, with the other occurrences happening in 2016 and 2018.Klika averaged 5.21 digs per set for Wofford this season. The native of Novelty, Ohio, is second in the league in total digs (537), which is 13th in the NCAA. Klika received SoCon Defensive Player of the Week in consecutive weeks back on Sept. 23 and 30. Klika, who is the first Terrier to be named SoCon Libero of the Year, is one of two players in the league averaging over five digs per set.Phillips is the third player in conference history to be awarded SoCon Setter of the Year, joining ETSU’s Caroline Dykes and The Citadel’s Belle Hogan, the 2022 and 2023 winners, respectively. Phillips finished the regular season with 1,066 total assists, which is second in the SoCon. The graduate student from Indianapolis, Indiana, also has 69 services aces this season, making her second in the NCAA in that category. Phillips was named the SoCon Setter of the Week four times during the regular season. &nbsp; Sweet earned UNCG’s fourth SoCon Freshman of the Year honor. The Woodstock, Georgia, product led the league in points (498.5) and kills (442). Sweet earned SoCon Offensive Player of the Week twice during the season.Mercer led the way with seven postseason all-conference or all-freshman selections followed by Wofford with four. ETSU and Chattanooga each had three selections, while UNCG and Samford had two apiece. The Citadel had one selection. &nbsp; Ekes and Phillips each made the first team and were joined by teammate Skyler Bumpers, who received the designation for the second straight season. Bumpers started all 29 games for the Bears, finishing with a team-high 75 blocks.Sweet, Samford’s Gracie Lynn Butler, Chattanooga’s Chard’e Vanzandt and Wofford’s Sarah MacLean rounded out the first team. Butler, who made the first team for the second consecutive year, ranked fourth in the league in kills per set (3.31). Vanzandt concludes the regular season in the top five in the SoCon in kills (374), hitting percentage (.343) and points (434). MacLean led the conference in hitting percentage (.353).The second team is highlighted by a pair of players from Wofford as Klika was joined on the second team by outside hitter Mary Emily Morgan. ETSU also placed two players on the second team as setter Reese Rhodes and middle blocker Abbey Thomas made the squad. Morgan finished second on the Terriers in kills (274) and digs (332). Rhodes is in the top five in the SoCon in service aces (39) and assists (973). Thomas led the league in total blocks (119) and blocks per set (1.18).The Citadel outside hitter Ali Ruffin, the 2023 SoCon Player of the Year, and Samford outside hitter Kaleigh Meritt each made the second team. Ruffin finished the regular season with 315 kills and 420 digs. Meritt concluded the regular season third in the SoCon in kills per set (3.55).Mercer libero MeMe Davis and Chattanooga libero Paige Gallentine rounded out the second team. Davis finished the season with 525 digs, which is third in the league. Gallentine leads the conference in digs with 624, the fourth-best mark in the NCAA in the category.Along with Sweet and Davis, the all-freshman team includes ETSU’s Makayla Bays, Mercer’s Lou Johnson and Sophia Henry, Chattanooga’s Kynli Kirkendoll and Wofford’s Bradley Brown.The Southern Conference Volleyball Championship begins on Thursday with a matchup between Western Carolina and UNCG. The tournament continues on Friday with four quarterfinal matches. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its volleyball players of the week on Monday for matches played Nov. 11-17. Samford outside hitter Gracie Lynn Butler was named the Offensive Player of the Week and ETSU middle blocker Abbey Thomas was named Defensive Player of the Week, while the Buccaneers’ Reese Rhodes was tabbed Setter of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.Butler, who also won the honor on Oct. 21, averaged 4.75 kills per set, while logging two double-doubles as Samford won a pair of conference matches last week. The Hazel Green, Alabama, native had 21 kills, 12 digs, six blocks, two aces and an assist in the team’s five-set win over UNCG on Nov. 15. The next day, the senior finished with 17 kills, 12 digs, three assists and two blocks in a sweep of The Citadel. Butler is currently fourth in the SoCon in kills per set (3.31).Thomas, who also won the honor on Oct. 28, anchored the ETSU defense at the net, averaging 2.17 blocks per set as the Bucs picked up a pair of sweeps last week. The Goldsboro, North Carolina, product logged seven blocks, three of which were solo, along with a kill, an ace and a dig against Western Carolina on Nov. 14. The senior recorded six blocks, six kills, four digs and an assist versus Chattanooga on Nov. 16. Thomas leads the conference in blocks (119) and blocks per set (1.18).Rhodes, who also won the honor on Sept. 23, paced the ETSU offense in the team’s two matches last week. Against Western Carolina, the graduate student posted 33 assists, 11 digs, two blocks and a kill. In the contest with Chattanooga, the native of Waco, Texas, had 42 assists, eight digs, two kills and a block. Rhodes has 973 assists this season, which is currently fourth in the SoCon.Samford (15-11, 9-7 SoCon) is the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament and will take on No. 5 The Citadel (14-13, 8-8) in the quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 22, at 10:30 a.m. inside Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on the campus of Wofford. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Mercer Bears won the Southern Conference regular-season title and claimed the top seed in the 2024 SoCon Volleyball Championship. The tournament will be held Nov. 21-24, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.The tournament, which features all nine teams in the conference, begins with a first-round contest Nov. 21, when Western Carolina faces UNCG, at 4 p.m.Mercer (24-5, 14-2 SoCon), who was predicted to finish third in the preseason poll, won the SoCon regular-season title outright for the first time in school history. As the No. 1 seed, Mercer will face the winner of No. 8 Western Carolina (8-20, 2-13) and No. 9 UNCG (7-21, 2-14) on Friday, Nov. 22, at 1:30 p.m. The Bears went 2-0 against both squads, winning over the Catamounts via sweep on Oct. 26 and Nov. 6, and defeating the Spartans in four sets on Oct. 18 and in three sets on Saturday.Western Carolina and UNCG split the two teams’ matchups during the season. The Catamounts won via sweep on Nov. 9, while the Spartans won in four sets on Oct. 11.Wofford (20-8, 12-4) was predicted to finish fifth in the preseason poll, but the Terriers concluded the regular season as the No. 2 seed. The Terriers, the defending conference tournament champions, will face No. 7 Chattanooga (17-14, 7-9) in the third quarterfinal match. Wofford won both matches during the regular season, winning in four sets on Sept. 26 and in three sets on Oct. 24. After being predicted to finish sixth in the preseason poll, ETSU (18-10, 10-6) comes into the conference championship as the No. 3 seed. The Bucs will take on No. 6 Furman (13-13, 7-8) in the final match of the day on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ETSU won both regular-season contests, earning a four-set win on Oct. 25 and a sweep four days after that.Fourth-seeded Samford (15-11, 9-7) will clash with The Citadel (14-13, 8-8), the No. 5 seed, in the first match on Friday at 10:30 a.m. The semifinal round of the tournament will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23, with matches scheduled for 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., before the tournament culminates at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24, with the championship match. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its volleyball players of the week on Monday for matches played Nov. 4-10. UNCG outside hitter Allie Sweet was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Wofford middle blocker Annemarie Rakoski was named Defensive Player of the Week, while The Citadel’s Belle Hogan was tabbed Setter of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.Sweet, who also won the honor on Sept. 2, averaged 5.71 kills per set in UNCG’s two matches last week. In a four-set setback against Chattanooga on Nov. 8, the freshman had 17 kills, nine digs, one assist and an ace. The next day versus Western Carolina, the native of Woodstock, Georgia, recorded 23 kills, which is her highest output in a SoCon match this season, 13 digs, two aces and a block. Sweet currently leads the SoCon in kills (413).Rakoski anchored the Wofford defense at the net, averaging 2.00 blocks per set as the Terriers went 1-1 last week. The Atlanta, Georgia, native logged a career-high nine blocks, four of which were solo, and four kills in a sweep of Western Carolina on Nov. 8. The following day, the junior finished with nine blocks, six kills and a dig in a four-set setback versus ETSU. Rakoski is currently third in the conference in total blocks (102).Hogan paced The Citadel offense, averaging 12 assists per set as the Bulldogs picked up a pair of four-set conference wins last week. On Nov. 8, the senior had 48 assists, nine digs, three aces, two blocks and a kill against ETSU. The product of Fort Wayne, Indiana, finished with a double-double the next day, logging 48 assists, 16 digs, three kills, one ace and a block against Chattanooga.UNCG (7-19, 2-12 SoCon) concludes its regular season at Samford (13-11, 7-7) on Nov. 15, and at Mercer (22-5, 12-2) on Nov. 16. Wofford (19-7, 11-3) plays at Mercer on Nov. 15. A win for Mercer in that contest will give the Bears the regular season crown and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its volleyball players of the week on Monday for matches played Oct. 28- Nov. 3. The Citadel outside hitter Sophie Childs was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Bulldogs libero Jaelynn Elgert was named Defensive Player of the Week, while Mercer’s Brooke Phillips was tabbed Setter of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.Childs hit .377, while averaging 5.17 kills per set as The Citadel went 1-1 last week. On Oct. 31 at Wofford, the graduate student logged 10 kills, three digs and an ace as the team fell to Wofford. Two days later, the native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, posted a season-high 21 kills, three blocks, three digs and an ace in a sweep over UNCG. Childs is currently 10th in the SoCon in total kills (246).Elgert, who also won the honor on Oct. 7, anchored The Citadel defense, averaging 7.33 digs per set in the team’s two matches. Against Wofford, the graduate student tallied 19 digs and two assists. The product of Peoria, Arizona, recorded a match-high 25 digs and five assists versus UNCG. Elgert is currently third in the SoCon in digs per set (4.89).Phillips, who has received the honor on four occasions this season, including the last two weeks, paced the Mercer offense, averaging 10.57 assists per set. The native of Indianapolis, Indiana, had a double-double, logging 33 assists, 17 digs, five kills, three aces and a block in a sweep at Chattanooga on Nov. 1. The next day in a four-set win at ETSU, the graduate student finished with 41 assist, eight digs, six kills and three blocks. Phillips leads the SoCon and is second in the NCAA in service aces (60).The Citadel (12-11, 6-6 SoCon) hosts ETSU (15-9, 7-5) on Nov. 8, and Chattanooga (14-12, 4-7) on Nov. 9. Mercer (20-4, 10-1) plays at Western Carolina (7-16, 1-9) on Nov. 6, and at Furman (10-11, 4-6) on Nov. 7. The Bears hosts Samford (13-9, 7-5) on Nov. 9.
