2009 Volleyball Championship

About the Championship 

The 2009 Southern Conference Volleyball Championship will take place on Saturday Nov. 21st & Sunday, Nov. 22nd. This will be the 27th Annual Southern Conference Volleyball Championship. The participating teams in this year’s championship will be the top two teams in each division (#1 North, # 2 North, # 1 South, and #2 South). The host will be the institution with the highest conference winning percentage. In case of a tie in conference winning percentage between the #1 North & #1 South - the host shall be the winner of the head-to-head meeting in the regular season. (Teams play cross-divisional teams only once in the 2009 regular season).

The semifinal matches will take place on Saturday, Nov. 21st at 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. The championship match will take place on Sunday, Nov. 22nd at 2:00 p.m. (All dates & times are subject to change). The winner of the Volleyball Championship receives the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

At last year’s Championship in Greensboro, NC, Furman, the South Division’s # 2 seed, defeated the South Division’s #1 seed, College of Charleston, 3-2. This was the first title for Furman since 1990, and ended the four-year streak of College of Charleston’s tournament titles. Furman became the first team since 2003 to win each match in the tournament in five sets. They defeated both No. 1 seeds, Samford and College of Charleston for the conference title.
