ASU Men, Samford Women Take Cross Country Titles

ELON, N.C. - The Appalachian State men and Samford women claimed the team titles at the 2009 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships at Elon University in Elon, N.C. on Saturday.

The Mountaineer men had four finishers in the top 10 to win their fifth consecutive men's team title with 44 points. Senior Phil Mitchell placed fourth overall followed by sophomore Sean Soderman in sixth, senior Alec Meyer in seventh and senior Josh Houser in 10th.

The Davidson men finished second with 82 points. The Wildcats were led by senior Lance Harden who finished third overall.

Chattanooga junior Emmanuel Kirwa won the men's individual title with a time of 25.00.38 on the 8K course. The Mocs finished fourth.

UNC Greensboro sophomore Mike Koech came in second with a time of 25:03.59. The Spartans finished third, with only one point separating them from second place Davidson.

The Bulldog women had two finishers in the top 10 and four in the top 20 to win the women's team title with 74 points. Junior Hillary Neal came in fourth overall followed by junior Ina Ables at fifth. Sophomore Andrea Seccafien finished 18th and senior Jessica Van Ausdall came in at 19th.

Samford won its first title in only its second appearance at the championships.

The Elon women placed second with 75 points. The Phoenix were led by senior Caitlin Beeler who finished seventh.

Appalachian State freshman Brittney Caudle won the women's individual title with a time of 17:47.32 on the 5K course. The Mountaineer women placed third with 83 points.

Furman sophomore Chloe Kowalski finished second with a time of 18:04.39.

Appalachian State head coach Mike Curcio was honored as the Men's Coach of the Year. Kirwa was named the Men's Runner of the Year and Wofford's Trey Parker picked up Freshman of the Year honors with his time of 26:04.19.

Samford head coach Rod Tiffin was named the Women's Coach of the Year. Caudle was honored as both the Women's Runner of the Year and Freshman of the Year .
