Winston-Salem, N.C. – At the conclusion of day one of the 2013 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, Samford leads on both the men’s and women’s side. The Bulldog men have 79 points, while the women have 53 points after day one of competition.
Saturday began with the women’s pentathlon and four men’s heptathlon events.
Elon sophomore Louise Prevoteau claimed her second-consecutive women’s pentathlon title, totaling 3,711 points. Prevoteau finished second in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.99. She posted a leap of 1.65m (5’5”) in the high jump and set a mark of 9.86m (32’4.25”) in the shot put. The reigning SoCon champion’s long jump mark was 5.57m (18’3.25”) followed by a first place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:24.42.
Samford junior Ashley Cope and Western Carolina sophomore Michaela Birek finished second and third, respectively in the women’s pentathlon.
In the men’s heptathlon, Samford won all of the day one events. Freshman Steven Bastien took first in the 60m hurdles in a time of 7.08, and also took first in the long jump with a jump of 6.98m. Senior Ben Davies took first in the shot put with a mark of 13.64m, while junior Brandon Bassett and junior Bo Ackerson-Gilroy both recorded a 1.90m mark in the high jump.
After four events of the heptathlon, Samford holds the top three spots with Bastien in first followed by Davies and Bassett. The men’s heptathlon will wrap up tomorrow with the 60m hurdles, pole vault and the 1,000m.
2012 SoCon Women’s Cross Country Champion Lauren D’Alessio of Samford took home the crown in the women’s 3000m with a time of 9:51.06, followed by fellow Bulldog Rachel Roberts and Appalachian State’s Amanda Hamilton. 2012 SoCon Men’s Cross Country Champion Paul Chelimo recorded a time of 8:09.07 to take home the men’s 3000m title.
In the women’s shot put, Western Carolina sophomore Alisha Bradshaw edged out Elon junior Charlise Morgan by .02m for the championship title with a throw of 14.28m. In the men’s shot put, Appalachian State senior Jared Stalling defended his 2012 title with a mark of 15.98m.
In the men’s high jump, Samford sophomore Bob Elliott II took home the title with a jump of 2.03m (6’8”). Samford senior Chenelle Terry recorded a mark of 1.75m (5’8.75”) to claim the women’s high jump title.
Georgia Southern freshman Alyssa Felton recorded a mark of 5.85m (19’2.5”) to take home the women’s long jump championship, while Samford freshman Steven Bastien won the men’s long jump title with a jump of 7.19m (23’7.25”).
Samford junior Ryan Cook won the men’s pole vault with a mark of 4.89m (16’0.5”).
Western Carolina took home the women’s distance medley relay title with a time of 11:52.62. The Catamount team consisted of junior Jocelyn Keen, sophomore Genevieve Emrick, sophomore Lena Elliott, and senior Mara Smith, and defeated the second place finisher, Chattanooga, by nine seconds.
On the men’s side, Appalachian State won the distance medley relay in the final race of the day. The Mountaineers’ team, which consisted of senior Nicholas Kelly, senior Tyler Combs, sophomore Raphael Rojas, and senior Chris Moen, finished less than a second ahead of Samford, with a time of 10:05.77. The Bulldogs finished second with a time of 10:06.61.
Preliminary trials were also held Saturday in the men’s and women’s 60, 200, 400 and 800m dash, as well as the 60m hurdles.
Western Carolina freshman Tayla Carter tied the SoCon Championship record in the 60m dash with a time of 7.43, tops in the women’s preliminaries. Samford’s Justin Emerson recorded the top time in the men’s 60m dash preliminary (6.84) and looks to defend his SoCon title in the finals tomorrow.
Appalachian State sophomore Stanley Broaden recorded the top time in the 60m hurdles preliminaries, 7.90, also a new SoCon championship record. Broaden broke the record set in 2007 by fellow Mountaineer Charles Derrickson (7.95).
Appalachian State junior Breanna Alston will look for her third-consecutive title in the 200m tomorrow after recording the top time in the women’s preliminaries, 24.43. On the men’s side, Western Carolina junior Aaron Tribble takes the top prelim time into tomorrow’s 200m final (22.20).
Alston also recorded the top time in the women’s 400m prelim, 56.51, while Tribble again recorded the top prelim time, this time in the 400m (49.39).
Appalachian State’s Shelby Howell recorded the top time in the women’s 800m prelims (2:12.09), while Samford’s Nathan Hendershot finished with the top time on the men’s side (1:53.94).
Sunday’s events begin at 9:15 a.m. with the completion of the men’s heptathlon.
